The release of Sony's new PlayStation 5 is fast approaching but gamers are still waiting on an official release date and price point. However, a quarterly earnings report from Sony suggests that the pandemic won't be affecting the Holiday 2020 release window for the console.

The PlayStation 5 was finally revealed at Sony's future of gaming event back in June. The virtual event provided the first looks at the design of the console as well as a large array of exclusive games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West. Players have been eager to get their hands on the PS5 since the announcement but with no official release or pre-order dates, there have been concerns that the console's launch could be delayed due to the coronavirus' impact on manufacturing.

Sony recently announced its Quarter 1 earning statements from 2020 and while many areas of the video game business have been negatively impacted by COVID-19, the preparations for the PS5 launch are going ahead. In regard to the PS5 the statement says "although factors such as constraints due to employees working from home and restrictions on international travel remain, necessary measures are being taken and preparations are underway with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season."

Many have been concerned over the ability for Sony to source rare parts during these times, particularly seeing as the company has indicated it will be ramping up production of the PS5 in preparation for unprecedented demand come the Holiday season. The statement addressed this by saying "At this time, no major problems have arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios.”

PS5 console and controller

This is promising news that the PS5 will be available as scheduled for gamers in Holiday 2020. While many other industries have been affected by the pandemic, gaming has never been more popular, with many turning to video games while they are stuck inside. Sony clearly wants to take advantage of the situation by manufacturing and shipping as many consoles for the holiday season as possible.

More announcements are expected for the PS5 sooner rather than later. Sony has scheduled a State of Play event for later this week however has warned players that no big PS5 announcements will be made. Some announcements are expected for PS4 and PS VR games and there may also be some updates surrounding existing PS5 games in development.

As Holiday 2020 approaches there are still some details about the PS5 that Sony needs to clear up. A leak recently suggested that the DualSense controller would have better battery life than the DualShock and Sony also confirmed that the PS4's controller would not be usable with PS5 games. More specific details around the controller's abilities and the PS5's backward compatibility feature would be welcome in the coming months before pre-orders for the console go live.

The PlayStation 5 is set to release Holiday 2020.
