Overwatch has been more adaptive than ever lately, given the relatively recent arrival of the Experimental Card feature. One of the latest changes to the game has players testing out a modified game mode, but a meta shake-up seems to be on the horizon.

In an AMA ("Ask Me Anything") thread recently hosted on Reddit, Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan confirmed that a balance patch tackling the current double shield meta was high on the Overwatch priority list. Although other topics, like a Paris rework, were briefly mentioned, Kaplan affirmed that Blizzard's main focus now is reassessing the double shield meta.

In his response to a question about potential class reworks and game changes, Kaplan made it clear that Blizzard is quite actively listening to its fan-base, which should come as no surprise considering recent backpedaling on a Moira rework. Although it may disappoint some to see stages like Horizon and Paris in the backburner, players have been wary of the "double shield meta" for some time now.

The so-called double shield meta relies on the usage of at least two shield-bearing characters, of which Overwatch currently has six (seven if one counts Zarya's personal barriers). In essence, teams can aim to overwhelm opponents with constant protection from multiple shields. Although unique melee characters like Doomfist serve as amazing shield-counters, there simply aren't that many unique melee characters. In fact, there are (very) arguably two: Doomfist and Brigitte.

This may seem like a trivial fact to some players, but considering Overwatch's growing popularity as an esport, it's no surprise that some are outraged - small structural details like this define competitive gameplay. It goes without saying that a deliberate re-balancing of the double shield meta situation has been sought for some time.

With Overwatch 2 expected sometime soon, and other new characters like Sojourn already in the works, players can't help but hope the rework comes in the form of exciting new characters and abilities. After all, what better way to counter shields than with something made specifically for that purpose? That being said, it's more likely that players will see an adjustment to shield stats and tank characters first instead.

Regardless of change, being able to test out novelties like the newly introduced version of Assault, without worrying about rank, is making drastic game changes all the more more anticipated and appreciated. Hopefully with the help of its vocal playerbase, Blizzard can handle the dreaded double shield meta without introducing another game-tilting team composition.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
