One game featured prominently at the Devolver Digital presentation earlier this month was Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a cartoonish mix of the battle royale genre with obstacle course-based game show. Fall Guys was given a PS4 and Steam release date of August 4 during the presentation, but before then the developers have decided to host a second closed beta test for the increasingly popular title.

The initial beta was hosted the weekend of July 24, and in its first seven hours Fall Guys became the most viewed game on Twitch — only beat out in terms of overall viewership by the streaming platform's "Just Chatting" option. On July 29, after hosting a small internal event to "test a few final tweaks" that was also highly viewed, the official Fall Guys Twitter account announced a beta set to begin this Friday at a currently undetermined time.

Fall Guys' social media is overtly focused on memes and user engagement, with the second beta announcement being played as the result of a choice between having "no more beta tests" and having one more that will reset players' progress before and after the event. The official reveal that followed, complete with separate sign-ups for streamers and the general public, references the "where we dropping" meme from Epic Games' battle royale Fortnite, which is crossing over with Marvel's Avengers.

Since the second beta was announced, the official Twitter account has been surprise dropping Steam codes that are up for any of its followers to grab, as well as awarding codes to people who make particularly fun videos and memes. The actual time when the Fall Guys beta will begin has not been announced as of this writing, but the account is active enough that it could come at any moment.

Having an engaging social media presence is a solid way for Fall Guys to gain prominence leading up to its release next week, especially considering how much attention the game has gotten on Twitch. Fall Guys has also teased interactions with Fortnite and other games like Boneloaf's Gang Beasts, which would not be unprecedented considering there is already Half-Life content tied to a Steam pre-purchase.

The popularity of Fall Guys in the weeks before its launch has not gone unnoticed, especially given its fresh take on the arguably over-stuffed battle royale genre. Fall Guys is a PlayStation Plus free game this August, so its likely Mediatonic's anticipated new title is here to stay.
