Santa Monica Studio's Art Director Raf Grassetti has been active on social media for months posting fan art based on other pop culture properties. The God of War artist posted 16 Batman character designs based on The Animated Series from the 90s through an impressive collage back in April, and since then he has apparently shifted focus to do the same for Marvel Comics' X-Men franchise.
Grassetti posted his take on popular X-Men villain Magneto to Twitter Saturday, just one part in a series that so far boasts seven characters including Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Storm. His ongoing collage, which he says still has "a long way to go," is set atop a fitting greyscale X. Next on the docket, according to his Twitter, is Mystique.
Though the franchise has a long history in comic books and animated series, the X-Men have grown into a global phenomenon thanks to a film series that started in the early 2000s that helped to kick off the current superhero movie craze seen primarily through the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Following Disney's purchase of Fox, the company has started hosting X-Men and Fantastic Four movies on Disney+, and many now believe the characters will begin to appear in the MCU soon.
Prior to his work on Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men fan art, Grassetti has published work related to other video game properties as well. In February, Grassetti shared Sonic the Hedgehog art depicting Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the style of Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which was due out around that time.
As much of the world has been shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Grassetti has also taken to posting discussions with fellow artists in the entertainment industry on his personal YouTube channel. His most recent conversation this Sunday was with Art Director Gavin Goulden of Insomniac Games, responsible for the upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 5 revealed during Sony's "Future of Gaming" livestream in June.
Insomniac's Art Director is also no stranger to posting personal art inspired by other characters to social media. Recently, Goulden posted Doctor Doom art to Twitter as part of an effort to "carve out some time for more personal work." Between his work and the X-Men series being produced by Grassetti, there should be plenty of great content from industry giants to appreciate online for a long time to come.
