Magic-slinging battle royale Spellbreak will go free-to-play on all platforms, allow cross-platform play at launch

Remember Spellbreak? It’s a battle royale title that we first highlighted when it was in pre-alpha testing in October 2018. Its whole shtick is that players fling spells at one another to determine who’s top of the heap instead of firing guns. The game has apparently come quite a way since then to the point of nearly launched, and the devs at Proletariat are confirming that when the game does launch, it’ll do so free-to-play and will allow for cross-platform play.

“From the start, we wanted to make sure that it would be as easy as possible for Spellbreak players to play with their friends, and making the game free-to-play helps us reach that goal,” says Proletariat CEO Seth Sivak in a quote from the presser. “Going free-to-play and ensuring the game will be cross-play on day one reinforces our goal of making sure Spellbreak will be accessible to as many people as possible.”

For those who don’t immediately recall (and didn’t bother to click the reference link above, you lazy thing, you), Spellbreak lets players choose a class and put together combinations of spells in order to spell doom for their foes. Get it? Spells? Ahem. The game promises a deep item and class system and offers either solo or team-based modes. Spellbreak is due to arrive to PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch at the end of the year.
