One of the most well-received weapons that Destiny 2's Season of Arrivals added is the Witherhoard. As good as the gun is, players are reporting cases in which it breaks the game.

Witherhoard is an exotic special grenade launcher that goes in the kinetic slot. It is not only unique in that regard but is also one of the few weapons in Destiny 2 that deals damage over time.

The weapon deals this tick damage exceptionally well, and thus, has found a place in many players' loadouts, regardless of activity. User rubydestroyer on Reddit reported that while playing the Mad Bomber adventure from the Forsaken campaign, they stuck the boss with multiple Witherhoard projectiles. They say the boss never came back after teleporting away, denying them the kill and their way out of the adventure.

Their triumphs page stated that they had killed the Mad Bomber, even though the game hadn't confirmed this feat within the mission itself. They suspect the damage over time applied by Witherhoard killed the boss outside the play zone. This suggests that a downed enemy has to be within playable boundaries to count as a kill.

Other users have stated that this can happen with the exotic heavy grenade launcher Anarchy too, which also deals tick damage to enemies. Some have stated that they had to restart their mission because of this issue. Another campaign boss, Panoptes, can also die between phases, leaving the player doomed in a field of electricity.

The Kell Echo, boss of Destiny 2's latest dungeon, Prophecy, can also wither away off-screen if stuck with a Witherhoard projectile just before exiting the DPS arena. This actually successfully completes the dungeon, granting all the due rewards. It could even be a blessing for those looking to achieve a flawless solo run.

With a weapon as unorthodox as the Witherhoard, it shouldn't be surprising to hear that this isn't the first time it broke the game. Very early in Season of Arrivals, players discovered that the weapon has a tendency to down a raid boss "instantly." It didn't always happen but was reliable enough to be used as a strategy, besides being fun, of course.

This was an unintended effect and was patched by Bungie on June 23. To many players' understanding, when at least two Witherhoard blights from two different players ticked the boss at the same time, it dealt an insurmountable amount of damage, downing even the tankiest of Raid bosses.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
