MMO Business Roundup: Stalker Online hack, Oculus Go, Army esports collab, and Apple’s next move

Welcome back to another roundup of MMO and MMO-adjacent industry news.

Stalker hack: If you’re one of the mostly Russian players of Wargaming’s Stalker Online, better check your account and change your passwords. Cybernews reported this week that a database of user info associated with the game is floating around hacker forums. Wargaming and developer BigWorld say the leak lines up with a May hack on the game’s MSK server (the same hackers mucked up the game’s website too). It sounds like the thieves took quite a bit of info, including passwords, emails, and phone numbers (ug).

Oculus Go: Say farewell to the Oculus Go, two years into its brief life. Oculus has announced that it will halt sales of the Go later this year. “The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, and you’ve told us loud and clear that 6DOF feels like the future of VR,” the company says. “That’s why we’re going all-in, and we won’t be shipping any more 3DOF VR products. We’ll end sales of Oculus Go headsets this year as we double down on improving our offerings for Quest and Rift.”

Esports: In a move that seems a bit off-key for the current moment in history, esports org Generation Esports has announced a collab with the US Army that’ll see a multi-day, multi-game tournament over fourth of July holiday. Games on deck include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Fortnite. “In honor of Independence Day, a holiday that should remind us all about what it means to be American and the values that we should uphold, we wanted to bring some fun to esports fans next month,” the group says. Values like video games and armies!

MacOS: Finally, Apple announced this week a big change in the tech underpinning the Mac operating system as it swaps over to the chip family it uses for its mobile devices, starting by the end of 2020. That means iOS apps – and iOS MMOs – will run on Macs natively, alongside Intel Mac software (and older Mac MMOs) in emulation.
