2019's Gears 5 stands among the Xbox One's most visually impressive and well-performing games, and it appears that its performance is enhanced even further by the Xbox Series X. According to reports, the load times prove this in and of themselves.

In an interview, technical director of The Coalition Mike Rayner discussed Gears 5's performance on the Xbox Series X and the console's handling of the game. Rayner indicated that the console inherently enables developers to do more with the Xbox Series X console, as Gears 5 can evidently load more than four times faster on Xbox Series X than the Xbox One. He clarified that this is without any changes to Gears 5's code.

Rayner discussed further specifics in his interview, saying that The Coalition can "improve I/O performance and reduce CPU overhead, both of which are essential to achieve fast loading" as a result of "new DirectStorage APIs and new hardware decompression." Essentially, Rayner summarized the positive aspects that the Xbox Series X brings with its improved I/O performance, which is significant in relation to loading times.

Xbox Series X floating above water

Rayner further praised Microsoft's work on the Xbox Series X, which is making huge generational improvements in line with those made with the releases of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The Xbox One currently has some games that are highly demanding as it stands in terms of what it requires from the standard Xbox One console, so the implication here is that the Xbox Series X should be able to handle any demanding Xbox One games with relative ease. This is proven by its handling of Gears 5, which is a technical darling itself.

The Xbox Series X is fastly approaching, as are its launch games. These likely entail the highly-anticipated Halo Infinite, which is far in development, though the other games for the next-gen console are largely shrouded in mystery still.

As for Gears 5, the well-received third-person shooter recently launched Operation 3: Gridiron. There is currently no word on when Operation 4 will be on the way, but The Coalition's steady stream of content via these Operations will likely keep diehard Gears fans engaged. Perhaps, this will continue through the release of the Xbox Series X, which will be able to run Gears 5 faster at the pleasure of Gears 5 fans all over.

Gears 5 is currently available on Xbox One and PC.
