Because of quarantines and shelter-in-place orders across the world, many people are having a bit more free time in their schedule than usual. While some may be using this opportunity to catch up on their favorite shows, others are taking the chance to make something new. But Joe Sutherland and his family found a way to do both by recreating a classic cartoon sequence: The Simpsons.
To many older or even more recent fans, The Simpsons opening is a television moment that has withstood the test of time for over 30 years. Following the daily exploits of each family member, improvements in the last decade have only increased the number of references and characters that have appeared throughout The Simpsons series. To the Sutherlands' credit, their Simpsons throwback works on so many levels.
Using some Halloween costumes, improvised acting, and skillful editing, the family members managed to recreate each moment in The Simpsons opening from Bart's chalkboard detention to a final gathering on the living room couch. With social distancing and certain limitations in mind, there are small differences such as Lisa playing on a recorder and Bart riding a scooter instead of their trademark saxophone and skateboard respectively.
In the end, the video is an prime example of what can be done to creatively pass the time right now despite many event cancellations. While the lack of a real-life couch gag may be surprising, all fans should be able to appreciate the dedication that went into making this custom opening.
