Todd McFarlane's comic book superhero Spawn is seeing a heightened bout of popularity since joining the cast of Mortal Kombat 11 as a DLC fighter last month. Now, the character's creator has joined forces with the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to put out an updated version of a Spawn action figure first released in 1995.

Unlike the recently revealed Resident Evil 3 board game Kickstarter, this is the first project put out by "Todd McFarlane Production." According to its introductory video they chose to partner with the site because "it's getting more and more difficult to sell a toy directly to stores." Though the project released today, over 3,500 backers have already donated $461,000 as of this writing — well beyond the $100,000 goal.

The updated Spawn figure is two inches taller than the original and far more detailed, with "double" the points of articulation according to the Kickstarter page. It will include an original comic book with a re-drawn cover, and there are three different versions of Spawn that backers can choose. A fourth donation tier can net all three versions of the figure plus two additional head options.

In the wake of Spawn's resurgence via his inclusion in Mortal Kombat 11, McFarlane has also expressed interest in creating a stand-alone video game for the character.
