When NetherRealm Studios added Image Comics' Spawn into Mortal Kombat 11, the developers also introduced an alternate "Hellspawn" skin for Jacqui Briggs. Having a hellish variant of the junior Olympian and Special Forces agent has inspired others, like Reddit user lightsource33, to create more Hellspawn Mortal Kombat characters like Shao Kahn.

After lightsource33 posted his Spawn and Shao Khan crossover concept design to the r/MortalKombat subreddit on March 29, it was picked up and reposted to Twitter by the official Mortal Kombat division of the ESL; an organization that hosts esports events. The artist says they created the design using a screen capture from Mortal Kombat 11, so it "looks real'ish' from afar."

Many comments on the Reddit post applaud the artwork and question why Shao Khan wasn't chosen to get an official Hellspawn skin over Jacqui Briggs. While lightsource33 says they believe Briggs was chosen as a body type and character that's the "opposite of Spawn," they would have preferred a character like Scarlett or Frost get the alt. They further stipulate NetherRealm might be trying to instill interest into the "new female heroines," which can be seen through other skins recently made for Briggs– like an Alien-inspired Space Marine look.

The inclusion of Todd McFarlane's Spawn was a long-time coming according to Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, who said many in NetherRealm Studios were fans of the comic character well before development on the Kombat Pack DLC began. The distinctive high-contrast red, black, and white color scheme of the character with bright green highlights makes him appealing to transpose onto other fighters.

Mortal Kombat 11's Spawn is well-crafted from a gameplay perspective as well, featuring tons of nods to his comic book origins for fans of both properties to dig their teeth into. This attention to detail follows from the other DLC characters introduced into MK11, including DC Comics' Joker and the T-800 Terminator based on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fighting games as a whole thrive with alternative skins that give players customization options for their preferred characters that allow them to express themselves. Whether those skins be based on other fighters like lightsource33's Shao Khan, or vaguely reminiscent of others like a Spawn skin similar to Deadpool, there will always be more for fans to imagine.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
