Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is finally letting some information about its season pass and upcoming DLC see the light of day, but there are still many questions about how certain things will work. One curious thing about the promotional material shown thus far is the images of Super Saiyan God Goku fighting Raditz and Super Saiyan God Vegeta fighting Dodoria. While this would seem to confirm that the two character can be used in conjunction with the time machine, the fact that the God forms can be unlocked before completing the story brings that into question again.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's time machine allows players to travel back in time to various points in the story in order to relive great DBZ moments or complete any sub-stories they may have missed during their playthrough. While the highly requested feature was well received, it came with many restrictions which fans did not expect. For example, players cannot make use of any transformations that the character wouldn't have unlocked yet at that point in the story, and although this makes sense, it seems redundant given that level is not scaled down when time travelling, make most fights incredibly easy anyway.

Super Saiyan God as a Form or Playable Character?

To make matters worse, there is even still some uncertainty as to how the Super Saiyan God forms will be handled. For the most part, this form has been referred to as playable Super Saiyan God characters or two additional playable characters, leading some to believe that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot may be repeating Dragon Ball FighterZ mistake of having too many Gokus and Vegetas. Their status as playable characters or forms also determines whether they will be usable in the time machine, as currently the time machine doesn't allow players to change their part during story missions (Super Perfect Cell must still be fought with Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, for example).

Images surfaced of both Super Saiyan God Goku and Vegeta battling Raditz and Dodoria respectively, and these bring the question of how the new form will interact with the time machine to further prominence. On the one hand, given that these forms can supposedly be unlocked before clearing the story, it could be that these images are a result of a playthrough in which the player unlocks the God form before even beating Raditz in Kakarot's first story arc, but it seems unlikely that SSG is unlockable that early. Furthermore, this would imply that either the transformation is in fact a new form or that the new playable characters of SSG Goku and Vegeta have some special rule that allows them to played instead of their base form counterparts.

If in fact these are a result of the time machine, however, then something must change about the time machine when the DLC releases. As was previously stated, the time machine doesn't allow players to change out the party, meaning it would be impossible for the Super Saiyan God forms to be separate characters, but also locks transformations based on the point in time the player travels back to, meaning it couldn't be a story locked transformation either. This seems to support the possibility that Super Saiyan God, whether as a form or unique character, seems to have some special rules in regards to how the story and the time machine handle it.

Overall, the data is inconclusive as to whether the time machine will allow players to uses Super Saiyan God, but the more likely answer is that it will. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot seems to pride itself in its faithful retelling of the Dragon Ball Z story, so it would be strange to allow Super Saiyan God forms of Goku and Vegeta to run rampant, defeating enemies with ease, so early on in the story. Ultimately, fans will have to wait until more information about the season pass is revealed, which will hopefully happen sooner rather than later.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
