Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Square Enix has released Final Fantasy 7 Remake early in some regions. Physical copies of Final Fantasy 7 Remake are now in the hands of various players in Australia and Europe, and these players have discovered that the upcoming JRPG has an absolutely massive file size.

As it turns out, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake file size on PS4 is a staggering 100GB. For players with the original 500GB PS4, this means that Final Fantasy 7 Remake would take up a fifth of their storage space alone. Needless to say, there will likely be many Final Fantasy 7 Remake players that will need to make room on their hard drives if they hope to play the game, but there's a good reason why the FF7 Remake file size is so massive.

In a recent interview with US Gamer, Final Fantasy 7 Remake co-director Naoki Hamaguchi explained why the game's file size is 100GB. According to Hamaguchi, the reason why Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a 100GB file size is because the development team decided to create unique assets for different areas in the game instead of re-using assets like they normally would. "[...] we designed assets like the backgrounds, [background music], and characters per location, which allowed for a unique gameplay experience in each area, even from a game design perspective."

Having completely unique assets throughout the game should make Final Fantasy 7 Remake even more visually impressive than it would have been otherwise, and will no doubt be appreciated by some players. Others may be annoyed that they will have to make so much room on their PS4 systems just to play the game, especially since Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just the first part of a planned episodic experience.

Due to the sheer size and scope of the Final Fantasy 7 story, Square Enix has elected to release Final Fantasy 7 Remake in parts, with each part as long as a full video game. Presumably, these future Final Fantasy 7 Remake episodes will be just as big as the original release, so fans will have to make a lot more space on their consoles in the future.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake launches on April 10 for PS4.
