Ashes of Creation’s Apocalypse ends its beleaguered early access

Ashes of Creation’s Apocalypse battle royale spin-off is going dark, according to a post on the game’s site last night.

“On Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. PDT, the Battle Royale servers for Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will be coming offline from Early Access testing. As we look forward to bringing you Alpha One in 2020, we are so grateful to our community for helping us test the crucial action combat and infrastructure systems that will be central to the Ashes of Creation MMORPG. From all of the bug reports to detailed feedback, your input has been instrumental in testing our persistent servers, patching process, and so much more!”

As MMO players will recall, Apocalypse was originally pitched as a quick-start PvP alpha for Ashes but morphed into battle royale to test the MMORPG’s hybrid action combat system last year. Last August, the mode hit Steam for a one-day F2P event whose negative reviews suggested that anger and confusion from MMORPG Kickstarter donors remain. Our own PvP columnist, Sam Kashani, tested the game and found it full of potential. It hit early access in September, and in spite of it apparently being a fun romp, MMORPG players grumpy over perceived betrayal review-bombed it into oblivion, such that it was functionally dead by December.

If you liked it, don’t fret – it’ll be back. “Testing for Castle Siege and Horde Mode [is] still planned for Apocalypse after Alpha One testing for the Ashes of Creation MMORPG,” the studio says. “Once the modes have undergone individual testing over the course of our MMORPG’s development, Apocalypse will be made available again with all modes for players to enjoy. You can expect these testing phases to pick up again after our Alpha One for the MMORPG has been released.” And of course, everything you earned in Apocalypse transfers over to Ashes.
