Since the launch of the Epic Games Store in December 2018, the company has been generously offering at least one free game every week, and the next batch of games will unexpectedly also include an Assassin’s Creed title.
The upcoming free games are usually listed on the Epic Games Store’s “Free Games” page a week in advance. That way, as gamers grab that week’s free titles, they’ll catch a glimpse of what’s to come and be sure to return to the store in the future. For the past few days, the page has listed the strategic card game Faeria as next week’s only free offering, but Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate has also suddenly been added to the lineup. Both games will be available for free from the Epic Games Store from February 20 to February 27.
Historically, the free games offered by the Epic Games Store have been the standard edition while the deluxe or more complete versions have been reserved for paying customers. That is likely to remain the case with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate next week, although the game’s gold edition will be available on the site soon as well.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was originally released in 2015 and is the ninth title in the main series. The story takes place in Victorian London in 1868, at the decline of the Industrial Revolution. Twin brothers Jacob and Evie Frye arrive in London to find the city overrun by Templars and, as followers of the Assassin’s Creed, they take it upon themselves to wrest the metropolis from Templar control. As with other Assassin’s Creed titles, historical figures make cameos over the course of the game, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, and Charles Darwin.
The game received generally positive reviews from critics for the PS4 and Xbox One versions, with praise being given primarily to the new combat system, unique missions, and memorable characters. The PC release, on the other hand, didn’t fare quite as well in the roundup up of reviews from both critics and gamers, though the predominant complaint of it being another rehash from the annual Assassin’s Creed assembly line didn’t seem to be PC specific.
Although Epic originally intended the weekly giveaway to end with 2019, in January the company announced that it would extend the free game program through 2020.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was released in 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
