Tenant’s journey features multi-option storytelling choices that branch out to 8 different endings, akin to Netflix's interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch. But within those choices is a detailed real-time relationship status and personality trait tracking, which assesses your decisions and influences how the story plays out. Each interaction with characters you encounter will weaken or strengthen your bond with them, depending on your approach, and their status with you will affect the outcome of certain scenes. Your decisions also factor into your overall personality score, which is revealed at the end of the story. While The Complex looks like a classic FMV game or interactive movie due to its live action nature, it appears that beneath the surface is a more game-like system akin to that powering Life Is Strange 2 or the Telltale games.
The Complex is written by Lynn Renee Maxcy, who is also part of the writing team for Hulu's The Handmaid’s Tale, and is directed by Paul Raschid. It stars Bad Blood’s Michelle Mylett, Game of Thrones’ Kate Dickie, and Twitch streamer LeahViathan. It has been produced in partnership with Red and Black Films, Good Gate Media, Little Jade Productions, Great Point Media, and Fields Park.
Talking of streaming, the film also features a pause system when choices are presented, allowing streamers to get audiences involved in making decisions.
Releasing on March 31, The Complex will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you can’t wait, you can get a (unfortunately not interactive) rush right now with the best sci-fi movies of all time. Matt Purslow is IGN's UK News and Entertainment Writer.
