Survival horror games are people's escape from the mundane life of happiness and bliss. They escape into a world of bloodshed and ghosts that only know how to murder. Along with other terrifying things that should not exist, in any shape or form. They want to hide in a locker for half the game because lockers in the real world are evil and full of malice.

Yet, what are the most difficult games of this genre, and why? Because of the overall difficulty? Or the weapons used in combat? Or perhaps the controls are as clunky as ever, and one scary moment leads to panic, which ultimately leads to a game over.

10 Forbidden Siren

This title is a unique horror, but it's difficulty relies heavily on trial and error, as they are very obtuse mechanics in-game, such as one character having to place for another character to use. But the game gives you no hints, so the game ends up feeling like a point and click from the '80s, as the solution is the most obscure thing in the world. There is zero handholding in the game.

Forbidden Siren gameplay is extremely stealth-based, but because of how janky the controls are, it gets incredibly annoying, especially around enemies that are equipped with guns, as getting seen is pretty much always instant death.

9 Manhunt

Manhunt is a tough stealth game with extremely clunky shooting sections, which add to the difficulty significantly. Hardcore is the hardest difficulty in the game, which allows the player to get a rating of 5 Stars, unlike Fetish mode, which is capped at 4 Stars. As well as that enemies' damage, accuracy, and range massively increase.

The AI is relatively resilient and will hunt you down constantly without mercy or reprieve, but you are a wanted murderer after all. Sound is a crucial element in Manhunt as the slightest noise can give you away. That chainsaw you picked up, it's doubtful you'll ever use it because the second you rev it up, the entire mercenary squad will come gunning for your blood.

8 Fatal Frame 2

Ever wanted to use a camera to exorcise ghosts? Well, Fatal Frame 2 is the game to do so, as combat is only using a camera. Nightmare difficulty is as it sounds, ghosts hit harder, health items restore less, the usual affair, but it also brings some new goodies, such as hidden files, extra battles against ghosts, and as well as new endings to boot.

However, the original Xbox version of Fatal Frame 2 had a new difficulty mode, called Fatal mode. In this mode, most ghosts will kill you in a single hit, some HUD elements are removed, and ghosts are transparent mist when outside of combat, so perception is undoubtedly needed.

7 F.E.A.R

F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R is an FPS with horror elements intertwined with it. You are part of an elite task force called First Encounter Assualt Recon, and you are picked for this assignment because you have slightly faster reflexes than anyone else on the team, that's the only reason. However, these reflexes are needed in Extreme mode, as enemies have increased accuracy and health, but that's not all.

This game is mightily praised for its AI, as enemies work together to try and kill you, they will flank you at every moment they can. The only downside to this is that enemies constantly chatter, so because of this, you can vaguely know the positions of enemies. If you've played through this title before on an easier difficulty by running and gunning, that tactic will not work on Extreme, as cover is the only thing that will keep you alive.

6 The Evil Within

The Evil Within is a third-person horror shooter, but it's incredibly difficult from the get-go, but playing it on Akuma mode is the worst. Akuma is everything of the previous difficulty Nightmare, plus one hit and you're dead. If you adore cheapness in video games and have the patience that doesn't evolve breaking anything in half, then Akuma mode is right up your alley.

Stealth is a godsend in the type of game, but like any stealth game, if it doesn't go according to plan, then you've got a horde of zombies trying to ruin your day, and even worse when a single stray hits, it's game over. Perfection is needed in Akuma mode.

5 Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 is another third-person shooting title, which has a Hardcore mode, which is brutally unforgiving. In Hardcore mode, only three saves are allowed, and checkpoints are disabled, so no relying on them anymore. This difficulty is a mix of two difficulties, Survivalist and Zealot; in Survivalist, enemies hit like trucks, and on Zealot, there are harder any item drops.

However, who needs ammo when you can stomp enemies into a fine wet paste, repeatedly, until all that pent up anxiety is relieved. Well, until you go into the next room, that is.

4 Bloodborne

This game is a Soulslike game, but the difficulty comes with the unknown, as you've got no idea what's going to be around that corner. What's that new enemy? Is it going to kill me in one shot? I'm scared! The weapons are unfamiliar, but the combat is fast and aggressive, so you have to get used to them fast, and of course, exploration is needed, as going from A to B is not helpful, as finding shortcuts are essential.

However, they are some bosses like Father Gascoigne, who is one of the hardest bosses ever created, and the reason why Bloodborne is on this list is 90% of him alone.

3 Alien: Isolation

If you've played through this game on hard, well with the added Nightmare difficulty, Alien: Isolation is a new kettle of fish. Alien has a heightened sense of things, so even when you feel safe hiding under a bed or inside a locker, you aren't safe at all. The big cutey adapts to what you do and where you hide.

Those noisemakers that are a fantastic distraction, well to begin with, and then instead of going towards the intended distraction, Alien will head in the direction it was thrown in. The bug guy is more unpredictable, which makes nightmare so much more horrifying, and as a bonus, you have no map. Good luck!

2 Resident Evil Remaster

Ah, the first Resident Evil title, with tank-like controls, ammo management, and trying not to cry when opening doors, this indeed was a difficult title. The Resident Evil Remaster, however, does make it slightly easier by adding alternate controls, which fully gives movement control to the left analog stick, but tank controls are still possible by using the D-pad.

With alternate controls dodging zombies is a breeze, but with tank controls, it adds so much more to the difficulty. Having to stand still and shoot, while praying the abomination coming towards you will die, is even worse when a licker decides to come into the fray. It's especially harder as ammo management is essential because you can easily softlock yourself by having no ammo, which is needed to clear a corridor you have to get through.

1 Silent Hill 3

Silent Hill 3 oh boy. This title has two different difficulty levels for two different things, a difficult difficulty, and a riddle difficulty. One is for enemies and the like, and the other is for puzzles. This game on the hardest riddle difficulty is insane; for example, there is a Shakespeare puzzle, where you have to know Shakespeare's material exceptionally well, or you cannot get passed this puzzle, well without guesswork or complete blind luck.

Even better is that when you've completed Hard mode, Extreme mode will be playable, and they are 10 variations of this, so Extreme 10 is the highest the difficulty can take you.
