Journey to the Savage Planet, the first title from Canadian developers Typhoon Studios, releases today for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Journey to the Savage Planet is a space exploration game, in which players are tasked with discovering whether an alien planet is fit for human colonization. As a lone pioneer, their only contact from home is the humorous reports of Kindred Aerospace CEO Martin Tweed.

Between The Outer Worlds, The Outer Wilds, and the overhaul of No Man's Sky, 2019 was quite a year for the space exploration genre. Just like these games, Journey to the Savage planet takes a more light-hearted, colorful approach to the hazards of pioneering. ARY-26 is a mysterious planet, and a large one, but just how long will it take players to discover all it's secrets?

To Boldly Go

Journey to the Savage Planet is the kind of game that wants players to take their time. Not only to explore the beautiful environments, but also to catch and appreciate the clever comedy that underscores it. Therefore, by ignoring the full amount exploration that the game offers, it's possible to complete Journey to the Savage Planet in just 10 hours.

This isn't much, and even those players who like to poke into every corner will be hard-pressed to stretch it much further than 12. Compared to some of its contemporaries this may seem quite short, but early reviews suggest that the game is well-suited to its length. While the sci-fi genre is often tempted to view through an epic lens, there's nothing wrong with a smaller, more compact experience.

One of the things that may affect how long it takes a player to complete Journey to the Savage Planet is its Co-op mode. This mode allows the entire game to be completed along with a single co-op partner. There is no drop-in option, keeping co-op games separate from the single player, but achievements are gained by both accounts.

Two copies of the game are required, so local multiplayer isn't an option. This means however that players can split up, exploring different sections of the planet simultaneously. Splitting up to cover more ground is generally a terrible idea in a sci-fi movie, but in Journey to the Savage Planet it's also the fastest way to discover ARY-26's secrets.

Journey to the Savage Planet is out now for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
