As far as player freedom goes, the Dishonored franchise has been a wonderful way for gamers to cause chaos in an open-ended environment. Now, however, that freedom is going to be expanded on even more, as Dishonored is getting its very own tabletop role-playing game from Modiphius Entertainment.

Simply dubbed Dishonored: The Roleplaying Game, the game's 300-page rulebook will give players everything thing they need to "tell stories of occult lore, intrigue, and drama." In addition, the book will explore some of the lore of the Empire of the Isles, where the other Dishonored games are also set, to help make the world feel more fleshed-out and alive.

Modiphius Entertainment has been working closely with Dishonored co-creative director Harvey Smith to get the game right. Not only that, but the team has partnered with a "diverse selection of writers and artists" for the game, some of whom have worked on the Dishonored franchise in the past. Arkane Studios has been clear that fans shouldn't expect Dishonored 3 anytime soon, though this may help fill the hole for some.

While it may seem strange at first, Dishonored is a surprisingly good fit for a TRPG. The world is a fair bit different from a lot of the other stuff out there, which may be enough to draw in some of the Dungeons and Dragons crowd burnt out with typical fantasy settings.  Other games have tried to transition to the physical world in the past too, with the Bloodborne card game proving to be fairly popular.

If anything, it's great to see more being done with the Dishonored property. Dishonored 2 was added to Xbox Game Pass some time ago, which helped open the franchise to more people, but it often feels under-appreciated. While Arkane Studios has been tight-lipped on a potential new entry in the franchise, maybe the TRPG will drum up enough interest in the franchise to guarantee another game.

If anything, fans will have to wait and see how the Dishonored role-playing game turns out. It opens up an entirely new world of opportunities for players, especially those that want to learn more about the franchise's world. Dungeons and Dragons has a lot of games in the works, so Dishonored moving to tabletops is a nice way to balance things out.

Dishonored: The Roleplaying Game is slated for release in Summer 2020.
