With the Lunar New Year Event taking place in Pokemon GO, trainers can now catch Gyarados in the wild much more frequently. This also means there's a new way to catch a shiny Gyarados within Pokemon GO.

Previously in Pokemon GO, Gyarados was one of the more difficult Pokemon to obtain. While not impossible, the fan-favorite Pokemon is rare and time-consuming to catch. During this event, it should be much easier to snag the elusive monster and if lucky, even get its shiny form.

Evolution

The most common way for trainers to obtain a Gyarados has always been by evolving a Magikarp. To evolve a Magikarp the player must have 400 candies, and of course, a Magikarp to evolve into a Gyarados. Remember to hit the "Appraisal" button to find the best Magikarp possible before selecting which to evolve into Gyrados.

During the Lunar New Year Event, more Magikarp are in rotation. This means that trainers can stock up on Magikarp, and thus, stock up also on candies. If lucky, players can also find a shiny Magikarp during this hunt and use this as the Pokemon to evolve into shiny Gyarados.

Raids

Gyarados can also be acquired in a raid, and shiny Gyarados has a chance of spawning. Gyarados will be a part of the raid rotation during the event in level four raids. Because it is a level four raid, make sure to bring along some friends to take down Gyarados.

Additionally, take electric Pokemon as they will do massive damage against this rare monster. Gyarados is doubly weak to electric moves because it is a water and flying typeRaikou, Zapdos, Luxray, and Electivire are all good examples of Pokemon that will have a good shot at taking down Gyarados in a raid battle.

Boosted Spawn Rate

While outside of events, Gyarados may be found in the wild, but they are typically very rare. However, because of this splendid Lunar New Year Event, Gyarados can now be found in the wild flying.

One of the main themes within the Lunar New Year Event is the color red, and of course, shiny Gyarados is red. The water flying Pokemon has a chance to be shiny, so players can keep an eye out during the event in hopes to find the shiny and intimidating monster.

The Lunar New Year Event will be live within Pokemon GO starting on Friday, January 24, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. and lasting through Monday, February 3, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PST. There will be many things to take advantage of during the Lunar New Year PoGo event, so trainers will want to prioritize and make the most of their opportunities. One thing is for certain, Gyarados will frequent the wilds for trainers to find and catch during this period so have those Ultra Balls ready!

Pokemon GO burst onto the scene in the Summer of 2016. Although it may never be able to recapture the cultural phenomenon that took place during its launch, it is still seen as a continual mobile powerhouse year after year. Perhaps the ongoing success of Pokemon GO is partially thanks to events like the Lunar New Year Event. The player-base will want to come back as long as there are new and exciting things to offer. And after three and a half years, Pokemon GO still does just that.

Perhaps the best thing going for Pokemon GO is that it may not truly be a stand-alone game. While many of its players rely only on the mobile experience, others use it as a stand-in between the core Pokemon games. Although, some enjoy Pokemon GO over the core games. Niantic has an awesome idea, but of course, the Pokemon themselves are all used from the previous Pokemon titles. It’s fair to ask the question, what will Niantic do when Pokemon run out? In the meantime, Pokemon GO continues to keep its players engaged and coming back to catch more Pokemon!
