Pokemon GO trainers busy this weekend with today's Piplup Community Day, but they're barely going to have a chance to catch their breath before the next exciting event kicks off and takes them back into the mobile AR world. Next week brings a surprise Special Raid weekend that features the return of two popular Legendaries.

The Pokemon GO Special Raid weekend features Latios and Latias, who have both been in the game for a while now, but haven't been featured in Battle Raids for quite a bit. This new opportunity to battle and catch the Dragon-, and Psychic-types is pretty exciting and will offer trainers a chance to test out some new counter rosters featuring more meta relevant Gen V Pokemon.

The Special Raid weekend is scheduled for Friday, January 24, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, January 27, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PST. During that window, the Legendary Pokémon Latias and Latios will be in five-star raids. Trainers should keep in mind that both Latios and Latias have shiny versions, which means this is a great opportunity to try and trigger those encounters and add a few more shiny Pokemon to the collection.

A Special Raid Weekend event is on its way! The Legendary Pokémon Latias and Latios will both be available in Raid Battles soon... These Eon Pokémon are both Dragon and Psychic type, so it’ll be best to bring along other Dragon-type Pokémon, such as Rayquaza and Dialga. They are also weak to Ice-, Bug-, Ghost-, Dark-, and Fairy-type attacks, so some recommended Pokémon to round out your Raid Battle teams are Tyranitar, Togekiss, and Mamoswine.

At a high level, the best strategies against both Latias and Latios involves sticking to the mobile game's most powerful Dragon-type battle raiders like Dialga, Rayquaza, and Palkia. There are plenty of good options for the roster, but those three would be the most reliable.

For now, players may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
