Not too long ago, it was confirmed that Overwatch 2 would most likely be coming out sometime this year in 2020. This is great news for all the fans who are eagerly waiting to see what new things Blizzard is introducing. While we saw some glimpses of gameplay and some of the features of the game at Blizzcon, there's still a lot the developers aren't telling nor showing.

There's a lot of information floating around from Jeff Kaplan's statements as well as other interviews concerning the upcoming game. However, we've made things easy for you to understand by compiling five features Blizzard is changing from the first game and five familiar features you can expect to see in the brand new installment of the game.

10 Changing: Graphics

You may not have noticed, but the current version of Overwatch is, in fact, getting a bit old. After launching originally and for the first time in 2016, the game has looked pretty much the same aside from a few tweaks from the earlier days.

The good news is, Blizzard is finally updating its graphics engine for Overwatch 2. The game will look much better overall, and the biggest difference we've noticed is how beautiful and smooth the characters' hairs look in the brand new screenshots that have come out.

9 Keeping: Original Maps

Overwatch has some of the most beautiful and vibrant maps. While not all of them are necessarily as popular (we're looking at you, Paris and Horizon Lunar Colony), it definitely wouldn't be the same game if players didn't get to experience these iconic locations time and time again.

The good thing is that Overwatch 2 will come back with all of the original maps that many have grown to love throughout the years. With the upgraded graphics, we can only imagine what our good old maps will look like.

8 Changing: HUD & Look

The interface in Overwatch has seen some very minor tweaks since the initial launch. However, nothing major has been on the horizon, at least, not until Blizzard dropped a bomb in Blizzcon and showed off some incredible gameplay of Mercy pocketing a Pharah.

As can be seen, a brand new HUD is on the way. Overwatch 2 will look more modern and much fresher than its original version, and some useful HUD changes - like Pharah's icon in the middle of the above image - will make gameplay ten times smoother.

7 Keeping: Old Cosmetics

One of the major concerns that many players have had since the announcement of Overwatch 2 is whether or not some of the cosmetic items and skins will carry over. While many other gaming studios would have surely made a different decision, Blizzard listened to its fanbase attentively.

Everything collected throughout the years will still be available to players in Overwatch 2, whether those were seasonal skins or golden weapons. None of a user's progress will be deleted, but will instead be kept and will follow them to the new game.

6 Changing: PvE Mode

We've seen a bit of PvE in the current version of Overwatch, from being able to play against bot teams with other players to seasonal events like the Archives event in April. PvE is definitely coming back, but it's coming back with a complete overhaul.

PvE will feature new hero skills, story missions, and smaller missions around the world that change regularly. Users will also see supply drops during these missions that simulate battle royale games, which makes it all the more exciting to experience.

5 Keeping: PvP Hero Skills

While the PvE mode will definitely introduce some brand new features, such as richer character abilities, the PvP will remain very much the same. As Kaplan explained, it wouldn't make sense to have different skilled Tracers running around in quick play.

All your current favorite heroes will still have the same abilities and kits as before, at least in theory. There might be a major balance patch with Overwatch 2 coming out, but we wouldn't expect anything massively out of the ordinary or complete reworks just yet.

4 Changing: Map & Hero Pools

Of course, with a brand new game, a ton of new content is to be expected. The map and hero pool will be completely overhauled, with new heroes coming in straight at launch. We've already seen some teasers which introduced Sojourn as a new character.

New maps are also added in the rotation, including Toronto, Rio De Janeiro, Gothenburg, and Monte Carlo. These will be available in the regular PvP modes such as competitive and quick play, so these maps are not unique to the story mode.

3 Keeping: Competitive & Quick Play

It most certainly wouldn't be the Overwatch everyone knows and loves without its core game modes. Whether someone is a quick play warrior, an arcade addict, or a devoted competitive grinder, they can definitely expect to see these classic game modes come back.

This also means that competitive mode will likely run the same way as in the past, with the current season length and no pauses in-between. Players will probably also start at their current MMR.

2 Changing: Introducing Push Mode

While new maps and heroes are on the horizon, there's also something that many have been eagerly expecting for some time now: a new PvP game mode. Blizzard hasn't released one of these in a long while, and it's only fitting that Overwatch 2 comes up with a new one.

Push Mode has been compared to something akin to a tug of war, where each team needs to escort a payload pushed by a robot to the opposite end of the map. Once the payload has reached the destination of one of the two teams, it's a victory for them.

1 Keeping: Role Lock

overwatch changes 2021

One of the major changes introduced to Overwatch over summer 2019 was the role queue system. This feature allowed for people to queue for the role they wanted and ensured that quick play was locked into a 2-2-2 composition at all times.

While many have criticized this system, it has fixed a lot of the issues of competitive play where no one would go tank or healer. Now, everyone can expect to have a decent chance at a fair and balanced game, throwers and trolls aside. With that in mind, role lock is no doubt carrying over to Overwatch 2, considering how successful it has been.
