Big changes are coming to The Division 2. The most recent State of the Game presentation from Massive Entertainment revealed early plans for its massive overhaul of The Division 2's gear system. The change will require a complete reset of all in-game gear, which Massive acknowledges may not be popular be still sees as necessary. The Division 2's new gear system, Massive explains, will be much more intuitive, deeper, and satisfying to all of the game's current playerbase.

Massive started its breakdown by detailing what it sees as problems with The Division 2's current gear system. The first reason cited by Massive is something many The Division 2 players can understand. It's too rare for players to get usable items. A product of this, and Massive's second listed reason for an overhaul, is that the system gets too hard to understand at high levels. Players need spreadsheets to keep track of what's good. And as a result, third, even when players get an upgrade there's no satisfaction. Together these problems lead to a lack of clear roles, something Massive wants to change.

To help with the upcoming transition when the gear overhault hits, Massive then explained what's going to happen. To start, all gear will be rebooted. Massive will also be adding a ton of new items to the game, doubling the amount of named items to be discovered. To create a new progressive ramp, the power level in-game will be raised at the same time This should allow players to learn the new system before they reach the point where every drop might be endgame gear.

From here, Massive goes into much more specific detail about the changes being made in the gear overhaul. Some examples include the removal of the "budget system" that limited the potential of an item. Now every stat on an item can "god roll" perfect stats. New gear will feature quality indicators for each stat, so players can see just how close it is to "god rolls." Talents are also reworked to encourage roles in group-play. For specifics, The Division 2 players can check out the Reddit breakdown or simply wait for the changes to arrive.

The Division 2 gear overhaul is coming soon, as it's planned to follow the Episode 3 DLC launch and that's arriving next month. But the gear overhaul is just the first step in Massive's bigger plans for the shooter looter. Following the huge gear overhaul, which Massive wants to do in one push, Massive will also introduce a new recalibration state storing system. Following that, Massive wants to rework individual skill power. In a matter of months, The Division 2 may feel entirely different than it does right now.

The Division 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
