It appears fans of 2K Games' BioShock series will have the chance to return to Rapture and Columbia on the go sometime soon. BioShock: The Collection, an updated re-release of BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite, will be reportedly releasing on the Nintendo Switch in the near future based on an incomplete rating filed by the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee.
The Switch will be the latest console to receive BioShock: The Collection, as it launched on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2016 before being put out on Mac in 2017. However there is no listed date for release on the hybrid mobile console, nor is there box art or an actual rating for the game - just a "to be advised" label.
The BioShock trilogy of first-person shooter games is beloved by players the world over for its fun gameplay, deeply-woven philosophical stories in fantastical environments, and breadth of hidden details to suss out — even if BioShock 2 is generally considered the redheaded stepchild of the bunch.
So well-regarded is the series' world building and environmental storytelling that there were talks of a Bioshock movie adaptation helmed by Gore Verbinski, Director of such films as Pirates of the Caribbean and Rango, a few years ago. However, that has since fallen apart.
Yet the franchise lives on, and a fourth game which has been in development for years at 2K was announced last December.
Despite the original game having come out in 2007, BioShock remains a fan favorite. In fact, it drew a lot of attention during this year's speed run charity marathon Awesome Games Done Quick when BioShock runner BloodThunder trolled his audience with a fake blue screen that cut to the Skyrim cart meme.
Keeping a video game under wraps is difficult when so many moving parts are involved, from the developers and publishers to distributers and ratings boards. Titles being leaked from any number of these places is not unusual, for instance when a new Assassin's Creed was leaked by GameStop and Amazon earlier this month.
While not much is known about BioShock: The Collection on Switch based on this Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee filing, the fact that it is in conversation at all should be very exciting for fans who once again want to dive deep or fly high — this time wherever they want.
