Fallout 76 is about to start testing the NPC-populated Wastelanders update

Hello, friend!

Originally due out all the way last fall, the Wastelanders update for Fallout 76 has been a long time coming to the game. The good news is that players have hope that their long wait is about over, as Bethesda will begin testing the content patch on private servers later this week.

This week’s test will be a small one, with only a “few hundred” invited to the PC-only beta. And if you’re hoping to at least get the scoop from streams and posts, you’re out of luck there as well: The test has an NDA slapped all over it. Still, it’s a sign that things are moving forward with the patch, and hopefully it’ll be released in a good state before too long.

The Wastelanders update is of paramount importance to the game as it adds non-player characters — something the online RPG has sorely needed ever since launching an empty-feeling world. Wastelanders is due out Q1 2020, but a smaller patch is coming to Fallout 76 tomorrow with a few cosmetic items and necessary prep work for the larger patch.
