Since the Switch’s debut back in 2017, a number of major horror titles have made their way over to the platform. From the likes of Alien Isolation and Outlast to Little Nightmares and a number of Resident Evil games, Nintendo’s portable console has quickly become a breeding ground for horror games of all shapes and sizes. Luckily for fans of the genre on the Switch, there’s a new critically acclaimed name to add to that list coming later this month.
Hitting the console on January 16, No Code’s Stories Untold will be the newest horror title to grace the Switch’s digital marketplace. The horror anthology was a massive surprise when it launched back in 2017, with critics praising its unique approach to the genre.
The majority of the game functioned through the use of a keyboard on PC, however, this new Switch port will come with reworked controls to better fit the use of the console's joy-cons. A trailer that was released alongside the announcement shows the new control scheme in action, displaying how the predominantly text-based adventure will be playable without a keyboard. It appears instead of the player typing commands into the game's virtual computer, they’ll instead select from a number of pre-written commands instead. While some may complain that this takes away from the immersive nature of Stories Untold, it’s a natural fit for a console-based port of the title that will make it far more accessible in the long run.
No Code, of course, went on to develop 2019’s indie horror hit Observation, which saw players help an astronaut navigate a spaceship through the lens of the ship's AI. It was largely a critical success, leading to a great deal more exposure for the team as well as a wide new fanbase of horror fans looking for innovative new takes on the genre. Re-releasing Stories Untold will no doubt be a great way for the studio to bring its older work to its newer fanbase, keeping them occupied while it moves onto its next project.
Stories Untold doesn’t seem to be the only port coming to the Switch this year either. If rumors are to be believed, players could be getting two new Wii U ports in the near future as well as the already announced Xenoblade Chronicles Wii port that Nintendo revealed last year. There’s no denying that Switch players will have a healthy helping of classic titles to enjoy by the time 2020 comes to a close.
Stories Untold is available now on PC, with a Switch port releasing on January 16.
