The self-proclaimed smartest man alive from 2018’s God of War has been brought to animatronic life by Bar-El Studio and the impressive results can be seen in a video shared on the company’s social media account.

Dubbed by Kratos as simply Head, Bar-El Studio’s life-sized reproduction of said head is truly stunning. Every aspect of Mimir in the video is pure animatronics and onscreen text emphasizes that no CGI was used.

Those familiar with Santa Monica Studio’s reboot of God of War will immediately recognize the talkative and sometimes boastful disembodied head from the game. Mimir’s glowing eyes glance about as he speaks lines taken directly from God of War, the skin and hair look incredibly realistic, and even the intricate etching on the horns growing from his skull have been skillfully reproduced.

Bar-El Studio was founded in 2010 and creates 3D models, special effects, animatronics, and even 2D illustrations for theater, cinema, and other industries. Looking back through the company’s Instagram history, it seems that work on the Mimir animatronic began around July 2019, a testament to the amount of work that went into creating the incredibly detailed work of art. Other notable company creations are BB and BB-9E from Star Wars and an Iron Man head.

To create Mimir, the company designed eye and teeth prosthetics, sculpted the cranium using Zbrush, and then used 3D printing and mechanical engineering to create an animated skull. The skin and facial features were then sculpted with clay and molded to create a silicone version of the face. These steps were followed by skin painting and detailing, application of the horns and hair, and likely hours of fine tuning to achieve the final result.

Mimir is one of the main characters in the action-adventure game God of War. In Old Norse, the name means “the wise one” and the man lives up to his reputation throughout the game. Beheaded by Kratos and carried about on his belt, Mimir accompanies the taciturn God of War on a meandering quest to bury his wife’s ashes on the tallest peak in the realms, sharing advice and a seemingly endless supply of stories all the while.

God of War was released in April 2018 as a PS4 exclusive.
