The Empyrean content update for Warframe, which brings large scale spaceship PvE battles to the already bustling third-person shooter MMO, has arrived on the game's Xbox One and PS4 versions. The patch's arrival brings the console versions up to speed with the PC version, where it landed first last week during the Game Awards.

Warframe's initial focus was on stylish, intense combat with the Tenno, described by development studio Digital Extremes as space ninjas, who use the titular Warframes to fight several enemy factions. Since its launch in 2013, the free-to-play title has expanded far beyond its initial premise, adding additional gameplay mechanics, open-world locations for players to explore, and even minigames inspired by the likes of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Guitar Hero. Fans have gone as far as to remix popular songs with instruments within Warframe, and players have welcomed the game's ambitious style over time.

Digital Extremes's efforts to roll a diverse set of experiences into a single game have only continued with the Empyrean update, which allows players to helm their own customizable Railjack spaceships and team up with fellow Tenno to take down Grineer forces between locations in Warframe's extensive star system. The mode is primarily designed and recommended for four-player cooperative play, but players can choose to use AI crew partners if they want to dive in solo. With ship upkeep and management of threats to keep track of, the extra help would certainly be welcome.

Warframe players will know the MMO's list of RPG-styled customization options well by learning to maximize their frames, loadouts and mods, and the Empyrean update expands on the rich systems by allowing Tenno to customize their Railjack ships with powers called Avionics, as well as Intrinsic perks that can be unlocked and specialized through completing missions. The new content appears to be inspired by the spacefaring thrills of titles like No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous, as well as the exploration and cooperative action of games like Sea of Thieves.

Unlike many of Warframe's story-focused expansions, players can unlock the Railjack and get to flying as soon as they acquire an Archwing flyer in the early hours of the game. Digital Extremes has promised improvements to the solo experience for content included in the Empyrean update for 2020, as well as the update's arrival for the Switch version of Warframe.

Warframe is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
