The Outer Worlds was released in October, and since then it's been seeing critical success, even being nominated at The Game Awards last night. Since launch, as most games of its size, a number of bugs have been found, some of which turned out to be a big hurdle to fix.

Back in November, The Outer Worlds had its first patch that fixed some quality of life issues like font size. Since then though, a bigger bug has arisen and the game's QA lead Taylor Swope took to Twitter to explain just how difficult the whole process was.

Summed up, his 18-message tweet thread about the "My companions are dead" bug in The Outer Worlds, Swope explained how the bug occurring in the first place was perplexing because, quite simply, companions can't die. Thus began Swope's investigation into every location of every script and line of code to find out why exactly the game was letting companions die. As big and full of secrets The Outer Worlds is, this is a big endeavor to fix a bug. Every time companions aren't in the party, they're on the player's ship, so he thought it might have something to do with the ship. It turned out that while companions are unable to take typical damage while on the ship, it didn't mean they couldn't take damage from other things. It turned out that companions were climbing invisible ladders during dialogue and falling that way.

The way characters interact with the world is via what the development team calls "furniture." This includes typing on terminals, leaning on walls, and of course, climbing ladders. "Somewhere deep in the complex beast that is the furniture system, we had code that disabled all NPCs from starting new furniture interactions if the player was in a conversation," Swope explains. But getting on and getting off of a ladder was considered two different actions. Therefore, companions would climb further than the physical ladder would allow and eventually would fall into space. Which is unfortunate, as The Outer Worlds has some pretty lovable companions.

Thankfully, this hilarious bug has been patched and players are no longer getting seemingly random failed missions due to space dives. As of patch 1.2, players are reporting the bug being fixed, with companion quests no longer being broken.

The Outer Worlds is out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and will soon launch on the Nintendo Switch.
