It's been a pretty big day for video game news, as both the PlayStation State of Play and the Nintendo Indie Showcase took place earlier this morning. And while both had some cool announcements, there's one that will likely stand out over the others for fans of the Metroidvania genre: Axiom Verge 2. The game was the final reveal of the Nintendo Showcase, and it looks like an amazing followup to the original.

Axiom Verge Creator Thomas Happ revealed in a video on the stream that he's been working on Axiom Verge 2 for about four years, with the game now set to release next year. It appears to feature numerous improvements over the previous game, along with new weapons, mantling, and more. The original Axiom Verge received positive reviews and great fan reception, and the new entry looks promising already.

There's still quite a bit of time before the game launches, as it's currently set for Fall 2020, though it seems likely more details about it will emerge before then. The first trailer doesn't give fans a ton to go on, but the various abilities and locations seen throughout do look like a massive improvement over the first Axiom Verge, and given that game's quality, that means quite a bit. The locations seem to be a lot more varied than the original, which is exciting. However, Axiom Verge could still compete with some of the best indie games of 2019.

The announcement has been somewhat overshadowed by the reveal of Resident Evil 3 Remake earlier today, but the reveal will likely rise to the top of the indie scene within a few days. It's a pretty major deal, especially considering that the original game was created by a single person. It appears that the sequel is also being created by Thomas Happ singlehandedly, though it isn't entirely clear.

There is quite a wait before Axiom Verge 2 will actually release, but there will be plenty of games between now and then. 2020 appears to stacked with awesome new titles, so there should be plenty to keep players occupied between now and then. Hopefully, Axiom Verge 2 is able to capture the magic of the original, while still improving upon it.

Axiom Verge 2 is slated to release Fall 2020.
