While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is still trying to iron out the balance in multiplayer, especially the range on the 725 shotgun, a more pressing matter has arisen that needs attention. For a small set of hardcore Modern Warfare players there is a bug that makes the game unplayable in that they cannot even launch a multiplayer match.
The specifics of the Modern Warfare bug are unclear but there seems to be a connection between Ribbons from Officer Challenges and high rank players. Reports from players who have collected 90+ Ribbons reveal that once players have reached that threshold they will be unable to access multiplayer. Anytime the player tries to boot up multiplayer, Modern Warfare crashes.

Ribbon challenges in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are another way for the game to encourage players to branch outside of their comfort zone. These challenges focus on performing tasks like resupplying teammates or getting 4 uninterrupted kills in the kill feed.
Completing the Ribbon Challenges will give Modern Warfare players an XP boost and every 10 that they complete will unlock an emblem. It’s nothing special and based on the experiences of those that have completed a lot of challenges it seems like it is best to avoid them for now.
The good news is that Infinity Ward is aware of the problem and working on a fix. How soon that fix might arrive is unclear, but Multiplayer Co-Design Director Joe Cecot says that it will be “very very soon.”
While bugs are inevitable in a multiplayer-focused game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they usually don’t prevent players from accessing a portion of the game. This is a huge blow to those who focused on the challenges and is, in essence, a punishment for interacting with the game’s systems so heavily. Others wouldn’t even know that the Ribbon Challenges are an issue unless they read reports online.
So, for the time being, Modern Warfare players are recommended to avoid the Ribbon challenges or at least not to complete so many of them so fast. Hopefully, a fix will be live by the time the bulk of the community gets near the 100+ rank range.
