Right now, for free, gamers can play as every single hero available on the Heroes of the Storm roster. During the opening ceremony that kicked off BlizzCon today, the Heroes of the Storm team also announced that Deathwing, a new hero, would be part of the free deal as well. The deal is only available for a limited amount of time, however, and will be ending on the 10th of this month.

This announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise for the Heroes of the Storm community, as Blizzard has a history of pulling away from the property. In December of last year, Blizzard announced that it would be moving developers away from the game to support other projects. Only a few days after that, the company announced the end of their support of the Hearthstone esports league league, which didn't go down too well with the fanbase.

This year, though, it seems that Blizzard is taking a different approach to the game. Heroes of the Storm doesn't receive frequent updates, and normally none of the heroes are available to the player at the start. Usually, heroes are on a weekly rotation, and you can only permanently own a specific hero by either buying them through microtransactions or in-game currency. For new players, this can make becoming accustomed to a particular hero challenging, but with this latest deal, players will have a chance to spend more time with their selected characters and see who they want to buy in the long run.

Blizzard's original goal with Heroes of the Storm was to create a MOBA game that rivaled the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends. The company's handling of the game, however, has kind of put a damper on that. Despite the game sporting praise-worthy mechanics and designs, it's never been able to achieve its full potential, and a large part of that is due to the decisions Blizzard has made for the game. This new deal, however, could potentially be Blizzard's way of saying that they haven't given up on the property just yet.

BlizzCon will run through this weekend, and on Sunday, Blizzard will announce some new updates for the game, making this deal only the start of things to come. What exactly it is that Blizzard plans on announcing is unknown at the moment, but considering they gave Heroes of the Storm recognition on the BlizzCon art, whatever they have in store should be exciting.
