Following today's announcement that the release of The Last of Us 2 is delayed to May 2020, it has come to light that Ubisoft is doing something similar by delaying the release of three of its hottest upcoming titles: Watch Dogs Legion, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and Gods & Monsters. These games were originally set to bolster Ubisoft’s current fiscal year, with Gods & Monsters releasing on February 25, Watch Dogs on March 6, and Rainbow Six on an undetermined date around the same time, but that is no longer the case.
More specifically, all three games are now slated to release during the next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. For some fans, this will be disappointing news to hear, especially since all three games show plenty of promise. Since they were revealed at E3 2019, fans have been intrigued by Watch Dogs Legion’s ability to let players play as any of its NPCs, Rainbow Six Quarantine’s horror-based spin on the series’ tactical formula, and Gods & Monsters’ open-world gameplay, which is heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
In a statement sent to GameSpot, Yves Guillemot explained the reasoning for the delay, stating that much of it is due to the underwhelming performance Ubisoft’s AAA releases have had lately. Certainly, reviews of Ghost Recon Breakpoint have been lukewarm at best, and Guillemot acknowledged the company released its live games, like The Division 2 and Ghost Recon, too close together. As such, it wants to ensure its next games won’t suffer from the same problems before letting them out into the world.
"We are tackling these issues head-on and already are implementing significant changes to our production processes," Guillemot said. "We are confident in our capacity to adapt and evolve, as we have done successfully many times in the past. In this overall context, we have decided to postpone the releases of Gods & Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine and Watch Dogs Legion until 2020-21. While each of these games already has a strong identity and high potential, we want our teams to have more development time to ensure that their respective innovations are perfectly implemented so as to deliver optimal experiences for players."
Watch Dogs Legion, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and Gods & Monsters are currently scheduled to release during Ubisoft’s 2020-2021 fiscal year.
