Woodpunk survival MMO Last Oasis previews its combat philosophy and design

Donkey Crew’s woodpunk survival MMO Last Oasis may have been delayed – twice – but the devs are still planning to push out dev blogs. The latest is actually a video all about melee combat in the game, both on the ground and on your wooden walking ships.

“We find it difficult to play the survival genre because we just can’t get into the combat system itself,” Producer & Game Designer Chris Thompson explains. “So early on we knew that we needed a skill-based combat system, which means that you have to choose the attacks’ direction […] with my mouse.” That goes for blocking, as well! The goal is to keep difficulty for basic combat at a minimum while “creating room for high skill ceilings” for advanced players.

There’s a ton of in-game combat footage on display too. My favorite part, however, is the sweet musicbox tunes in the background of the battle. Also, the developer doing the video is actually wearing a sword on his back in the office. I mean, why not, right?
