Red Dead Redemption 2 and its multiplayer component Red Dead Online released around the same time, but it seems that Rockstar has reset its focus firmly on the multiplayer alone (along with a possible Red Dead 2 PC port). In a vein similar to what happened with Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto 5, Rockstar is currently not working on single-player DLC.

It's been nearly a year since Red Dead Redemption 2's launch in October of 2018, with no significant add-ons to speak of in the time since. The base game was fairly massive, but fans of the single-player campaign may not be thrilled to hear of Rockstar's current goals all the same.

Rockstar is "100% focused on online right now," according to lead online production associate Katie Pica, who believes that the Red Dead Online team will be able to "bring everything that a player can love about single-player into the online world, and fleshed out." Rather than adding to the existing single-player campaign, Rockstar has spent its time adding to the online experience, most recently with the Frontier Pursuits update that added three new roles to the multiplayer. And when it comes to the reasons behind foregoing DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2, producers cite the game's already existing size and quality. “We’ve said it before, but we all love single-player games, and Red Dead Redemption 2’s absolutely massive story and equally massive epilogue are hopefully evidence of that,” added online producer Tarek Hamad.

It's not entirely surprising that Rockstar decided to focus on Red Dead Online, as something similar happened with GTA 5. The single-player game hasn't received any major expansions in its six-year lifespan, but GTA Online most definitely has. Rockstar sees Red Dead Online as a project that requires as much care and expansion as Red Dead 2 already got, as Hamad puts it:

"Our ambitions for our online games are just as high, and with Red Dead Online we are continuing to build and expand to match the world we created for Red Dead Redemption 2’s story, not just with the roles but other activities, new random events, characters to meet, new ways to engage with the world and further inhabit your character, as well as trying to improve the overall experience."

It looks like Rockstar is dead-set on its goals for the near future, which might upset fans of the single-player campaign. Continuing to update Red Dead Online is, admittedly, a great way to keep the game profitable for years, but those who prefer to play in the comfort of their own campaign will have to go back in and look for new Red Dead encounters...or wait for the next game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PS4 and Xbox One.
