With the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, fans were given the opportunity to play better-performing versions of their favorite games before the release of an entirely new console generation. However, it now feels as though some games are being developed specifically for these upgraded consoles, leading players to encounter serious performance issues when they attempt to play these titles on the base PS4 and Xbox One. That said, it seems that fans can rest assured that such a situation will not occur with The Last of Us 2.

In a recent conversation with US Gamer, Lead Game Designer Emilia Schatz indicated that the "target platform is the PS4, the base" for The Last of Us 2. Certainly, players that opt to play TLoU2 on the more powerful PS4 Pro can look forward to enjoying improved resolution, but the suggestion is that developer Naughty Dog intends for the experience to be solid for those playing on the standard PS4 as well. Speaking further on the base PS4, Schatz stated that it is "actually what I've got on my desk at work, and so that's what we sort of aim for."

This will undoubtedly come as welcome news to many fans who still play games primarily on the standard PS4 hardware. Recently released titles like Borderlands 3 and Control have left some players feeling frustrated, as the performance of these games on the base PS4 has been less than ideal. While it remains to be seen exactly how Schatz's indications will materialize, it at least appears that the developer is aiming for The Last of Us 2 to be a game that can be easily enjoyed on older hardware.

This information comes hot on the heels of last week's PlayStation State of Play, which finally revealed the Last of Us 2's release date and more. Since this presentation, additional information on the title, including the fact that TLoU2 will not feature multiplayer, has come to the fore, and fans are now gearing up for the game's launch next year. Fortunately, for those that may have been concerned about how well the game will run on the base PS4, it seems that the game's performance should not be an issue.
