How to File a Claim for the Yahoo Breach Settlement

With all the big corporate data breaches that have been discovered over the past few years, you might have forgotten about the one at Yahoo that exposed 500 million account passwords in 2016.

It’s finally time to file your claim to get a portion of the company’s $117.5 million class-action settlement. The case actually covers four separate breach events occurring at Yahoo between 2012 and 2016.

You’re eligible if you were sent a notice about the breach in 2016 or 2017, or if you had a Yahoo account between 2012 and 2016.

Like other similar breach cases, the Yahoo settlement is offering two options: You can get two years of free credit-monitoring services, or, if you already have such a service, you can ask for $100. Just like in the Equifax case, your cash compensation could be less than $100 if everyone and their brother signs up to get cash. This case also specifies that if there’s leftover money, you could get up to $358.80. (Our advice: Don’t expect any leftover money.)

If you file a claim to be reimbursed for expenses and/or time (up to 15 hours) you lost dealing with the impact of the breach, you can submit documentation in order to get up to $25,000.

You’ll need to know your Yahoo username in order to file a claim. You can submit your claim on the settlement website.

Final approval of the settlement is scheduled for April 2, 2020. The deadline to send in your claim is July 20, 2020.
