Apple Arcade launches September 19

Premium mobile game service will cost $5/month

At today's Apple Special Event, Apple showed off more details for its upcoming premium mobile game subscription service Apple Arcade, including a release date of September 19.

The service will cost $4.99/month, with a one-month free trial available at launch. Over 100 premium games will be available upon release from studios such as Annapurna Interactive, Bossa Studios, Cartoon Network, Capcom, Finji, Giant Squid, Klei Entertainment, Konami, LEGO, Mistwalker Corporation, SEGA, Snowman, ustwo games, and others.

Three titles were shown at the event that will be available at launch on Apple Arcade: Frogger in Toy Town (Konami), Shinsekai Into the Depths (Capcom), and Sayonara Wild Hearts (Annapurna Interactive).

None of the games on Apple Arcade will include ads or in-app purchases, and can be played across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AppleTV. The subscription includes access for up to six family members, and will be available at launch in over 150 countries.

Apple Arcade was announced back in March as an answer to the struggles of premium mobile game developers in a marketplace where free-to-play games with microtransactions dominate. Currently, Apple's mobile rival Google appears to be developing its own answer to a premium mobile game subscription service, though no official details on that have yet been revealed.
