After Square Enix concluded its Tomb Raider reboot video game trilogy last year, die-hard fans of the franchise might be wondering if there's anything else to look forward to. While all remains quiet on the gaming side of things, good news just broke concerning MGM's Tomb Raider film reboot: a sequel is definitely coming, now with a director and release date attached.

In 2018, the same year that the game trilogy's final installment launched, the first of potentially multiple Tomb Raider movie adaptations released. As most would attest, the film did okay; it was a serviceable adaptation of Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider (2013), though not especially profitable for MGM. Apparently, it was enough though, as the studio is moving forward with a sequel.

The 2018 Tomb Raider reboot starred Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, who'll be be reprising her role as the daring archaeologist and heroine. In further news, sequel's director is going to be Ben Wheatley, known for his previous projects such as Kill List, Free Fire, and even a few episodes of Doctor Who from the Peter Capaldi era. The forthcoming Tomb Raider will be written by Amy Jump, who worked with Wheatley on his other notable project too, and produced by Graham King and GK Films. As for the date, the as-yet-unnamed sequel is set to release in March 2021.

A sequel for Tomb Raider (2018) didn't always seem like a sure thing, what with the movie only earning $58 million domestically after being produced on a $94 million budget. It did still earn $274 million worldwide, likely leading to this decision. With the 2018 film based heavily on the Tomb Raider (2013) game, it would make sense for the sequel to continue that trend and feature elements of 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider, though it's entirely possible this new film could take a different direction too.

Either way, it's exciting to see Lara Croft coming to the big screen once more. Tomb Raider's makeover in the new Square Enix games has been exciting to follow, so it'll be see interesting to see where the movies goes. Hopefully, the intriguing choice of Ben Wheatley as director, along with cues from the games, will be enough to build off of the previous film's potential and breathe new life into Lara Croft's cinematic presence.

MGM and Ben Wheatley's Tomb Raider sequel hits theaters on March 19, 2021.
