The Elder Scrolls Online was released five years ago by Bethesda and developer ZeniMax Online Studios. While Elder Scrolls Online may not be the most popular online game today, it still has a steady amount of followers keeping it alive.
The game was initially released for the PC and has since been ported to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Now, in an interview with Twinfinite, game director Matt Firor was asked about the possibility of a Switch port, for players who may want to play the game on the go. Unfortunately, Firor revealed bluntly that it is technically impossible to release a game as massive as Elder Scrolls Online to a console like the Switch.
Although the Switch has been capable of playing other Bethesda games such as Skyrim, Firor explained that the Switch just doesn't have the processing power unlike traditional home consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. "Not going to happen," Firor said when asked about a Switch port. "The only way it'd work is if there was some kind of streaming service on Switch. It's just not powerful enough."
The dev's answer was blunt and clear implying that as it stands today, the Switch's hardware limitations would make it impossible to port the online game. However, it appears that another port of Elder Scrolls Online is currently in the works. At Google Stadia's Gamescom presentation, it was revealed that the streaming service is set to include The Elder Scrolls Online in its roster of games.
Meanwhile, the developer behind The Elder Scrolls Online is currently working on a new game with a new engine. While the studio did not explain in-depth what the upcoming game will be about, it was revealed that it will be a new IP. Given this, The Elder Scrolls Online 2, or any possible title linked with Bethesda's other franchises are out of the question.
The Elder Scrolls Online is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
