As announced by Nintendo at Gamescom, Runic Games' dungeon crawler Torchlight 2, which we named one of the best co-op games of 2012, is coming soon to the Nintendo Switch, launching on the platform on September 3. Torchlight 2 is also heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the same release date.

Torchlight 2 was first released in 2012 on PC, though it never made the jump to consoles like many indie titles have. Now, the dungeon crawler is jumping over to all the consoles at once, offering new console-friendly UI, an upgraded targeting system, and more.

During today's Nintendo Indie World showcase, viewers got a look at Torchlight 2 on the Switch. The latest trailer showed off some gameplay for the title, emphasizing the ability to play Torchlight 2 on the go. The trailer ends with a firm release date, September 3. Those that pre-order Torchlight 2 on Switch will get a pet Unicorn and those that pre-order the title on any system will receive a pet Yapper.

Torchlight 2 is the latest of indie games making their way to the Switch. The portability aspect of the Switch offers new life to these indie titles, which are often limited to PC and home consoles. For smaller developers, this offers the chance to reach a new audience, making the release on Switch worth the expense of porting. On top of that, Runic Games is going for broke by also releasing on the PS4 and Xbox One, trying to capture all the gamers that don't play on PC.

While it seems like a no-brainer for higher-profile indie titles to jump to the Switch, it's a strange situation in Torchlight 2's case. As a dungeon crawler, Torchlight 2 is best played with friends, but portability limits the possibility of online play. It's also difficult to tell if Torchlight 2 is available for cross-play, which may limit player pools depending on which version is bought. However, players can also team up in local multiplayer on the Switch, alleviating the need for a constant online connection.

Also, with the success of Diablo 3 on the Switch, it only seems natural that Torchlight 2 also takes a shot on the portable console. The entire campaign can also be played solo, even if in general teaming up to take down mobs of enemies for bucketloads of loot is more enjoyable.

Torchlight 2 will be available on the Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on September 3. It is now available on PC and PS4.
