At its Gamescom Indie World Showcase Nintendo announced Risk of Rain 2 is coming to Switch. The roguelike followup to 2013's Risk of Rain was released in early access for PC back in March and will be on Switch later this summer.

Developed by Hopoo Games, Risk of Rain 2 is a third-person shooter style roguelike where you choose a character and team up with up to four friends to shoot baddies and get improved items and weapons. The stylized gameplay trailer showed off some cinematic action, but no actual gameplay running on the Switch. A stinger at the end confirmed that publisher Gearbox will be releasing more information on August 30.

The original Risk of Rain was a pixel art roguelike action game that inspired a small, but ravenous fan base. The sequel took a much different aesthetic approach, adopting a more colorful art style and detailed world. The perspective shifted to a hybrid of behind the back third person shooter with MMO UI elements. The major visual overhaul and density of secrets and collectibles led to Risk of Rain being beloved even more than the first game.

Summer 2019 is nearly over so there is not much time left to get the game out there in order to hit this window, however it seems like the developers are right on track. The roadmap Hopoo Games released set a Spring 2020 date for release of the 1.0 game on PC. Along this roadmap, a Summer 2019 update was planned. It seems like this update could correspond with the Switch release.

The developers have been sticking to their roadmap so far. The planned June update was rolled out on June 25th titled the "Scorched Acres Content Update." The free pack included new characters, new enemies and bosses, as well as new areas. Scorched Acres also added tons of smaller improvements and content and lore to the world of Risk of Rain 2.

It's unclear whether or not the Switch version will be in lockstep with the PC release. Switch owners can only hope they get a comparable experience to PC players in the early days of this game's lifespan.

Risk of Rain 2 is currently in Early Access on PC and is set for release on Switch in Summer 2019.
