If you’re still a bit bummed over Mojang canceling Minecraft’s Super Duper Graphics Pack overhaul, then I do have a little bit of good news for you: An indie dev team is working on an MMORPG built on top of the classic voxel sandbox. It’s called Hegemony, and according to the lead dev (whose day job is working for Path of Exile’s Grinding Gear Games), it began as a small build project for Minecraft but over the course of four years of development has scaled up into a full-fledged MMO in its own right, with “at least 1500 hours of content” planned for release, a huge map, conquerable territory, and constant updates.

Hegemony is a classic-styled MMORPG set in a parallel world to 14th – 17th century Europe. Hegemony has a heavy focus on shifting away from current MMORPG trends and returning to the game design principles that made MMORPGs in our childhoods such memorable experiences,” the studio says.

“Hegemony has a contiguous world where players can feel that they are truly a part of. We eschew the theme-park model of world and level design; there are no clear distinctions of an area being end-game or early-game. Locations and their respective content are strongly integrated, resulting in lower and higher level players constantly mingling. […] In Hegemony, the player is not the hero but instead an opportunistic nobody trying to make it in the world. Quests will require players to take advantage of the situation, manipulate, read between the lines and sometimes solve puzzles/riddles in order to advance.”

The game is expected to be free-to-play without pay-to-win mechanics. Check it out on its official site!
