Announced all the way back at E3 2014, Dead Island 2 has had a rough development cycle, to say the least. The game has been passed from one studio to the next, and has floundered in development hell, in a manner not unlike the original Dead Island game. However, it seems as though progress is finally being made on Dead Island 2, as the game has been assigned to yet another studio.

THQ Nordic, which owns Dead Island 2 publisher Deep Silver, confirmed that Dead Island 2 is still in active development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. However, instead of Yager Interactive or Sumo Digital developing the game, it's now being worked on by Dambuster Studios. Dambuster Studios, for the uninitiated, is the company behind the poorly-received Homefront: The Revolution.

While some may be disappointed that the Homefront: The Revolution studio is now working on Dead Island 2, others will be relieved that the game is still in development at all. It was reported all the way back in December of 2018 that Dead Island 2 had likely switched developers again, with Sumo Digital being moved off the project. However, this is the first time we've had official confirmation that a different studio is working on Dead Island 2 instead of Sumo Digital, and so some were worried that the game had been scrapped altogether.

Dead Island 2 pre orders E3 announcement

Of course, it's quite likely that Dead Island 2's release date is still quite a ways off. Assuming Dambuster Studios took over for Sumo Digital late last year when the first reports about a new developer surfaced and it kept some of Sumo's work, it's possible that we could see the game in late 2020 or 2021. If development on Dead Island 2 started over from the beginning or just started at Dambuster Studios very recently, then the wait for the game will be even longer.

Since the first Dead Island went through an overlong development cycle as well, fans of the series may have expected that Dead Island 2 would have similar issues. Whenever we do see the game again, it will be interesting to see if it looks anything like the vibrant, quirky game that was first shown at E3 2014, or if it has become something completely different.

Dead Island 2 is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
