Currently in Destiny 2, players can enter into both the traditional Gambit mode that debuted with the Forsaken expansion in fall 2018 as well as Gambit Prime, an alternate version of the game's PvPvE mode that debuted in Season of the Drifter earlier this year. But in the future, there will only be one version of Gambit in the game.

It's unknown exactly when the Gambit playlist will be consolidated and which version of the mode will survive the cut, but Destiny 2's franchise director Luke Smith explained in his lengthy "Director's Cut" blog post that eventually players and the developer will have to choose one over the other.

Smith said that the decision is not about taking options away from players but said that Destiny 2 can't infinitely expand and choosing one will allow Bungie to support the mode better:

"This isn't just about removing stuff from Destiny 2 -- but the game cannot grow infinitely forever --it's about focusing refinements and evolutions to the Gambit ecosystem. We think Gambit is sweet and deserves more ongoing support and we want to ultimately focus that support on whichever mode ends up being the Highlander. There can be only one."

Gambit Prime was introduced in March 2019 as a refinement and more hardcore version of the classic mode. It brought Gambit's three rounds down to one allowing for quicker and often more competitive matches. It also introduced a new mechanic of letting enemy players drain Motes as well as how teams damage the Primeval, as well as adding player roles that were backed up by the offering of new armor sets that gave special abilities to players who could collect a full armor set of a particular playstyle.

destiny 2 gambit prime and gambit classic update

The biggest problem Gambit Prime faces in the opinion of many players is due to the fact that it was part of the main progression loop in Season of the Drifter. Between Gambit Prime and the Reckoning, it was the only new content for an entire season leading to players feeling burned out over the mode, and in many ways, Gambit in general. Smith admitted that Bungie understands that overly focusing on one mode for an entire season did not excite a lot of players.

The positive side is that with a move to choose and focus on only one version of Gambit, Bungie can hopefully devote the time and energy to further refining Gambit with the goal to re-engage players in the mode, many of whom are still feeling that burn out.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
