God of War game director Cory Barlog has slammed microtransactions in a post on his official Twitter. This isn't the first time that the game developer has leveled criticism at the business model, once giving an energetic response when a fan asked if God of War would have microtransactions in it.

The official Xbox Twitter account asked its followers who they would nominate as the "best video game villain?" Barlog was quick to respond, quote tweeting the message and adding "microtran$actions." Barlog's cheeky reply quickly got wave of positive feedback from fans, with more than 4,000 people retweeting the post and nearly 20,000 liking the tweet.

Some also seemed to take it as shade towards video game publishers EA, Activision, and Bethesda, who have used microtransactions in many of their new releases. Bethesda's Fallout 76 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood have microtransactions, while microtransactions in the FIFA Ultimate Team game mode now makes EA more money than sales of FIFA. Microtransactions are also a part of Activision titles Overwatch and Call of Duty, and they'll soon be added to Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled as well.

Several others also responded with applause GIFs and messages saying that they "love" Barlog and his anti-microtransaction views. "This is why I love you," wrote one Twitter user named Scotty K, while a user named VP said that "we really don't deserve" Barlog and the rest of the God of War development team.

Barlog's tweet got a huge positive response, but not everyone feels as strongly about them. A study revealed that 69% of gamers feel that cosmetic microtransactions are acceptable. A much lower percentage of gamers support pay to win microtransactions, or paid for boosts to gameplay, however, and this kind of business model does get significant ire.

The tweet may also suggest that the next God of War game won't have microtransactions. Barlog and the team at Santa Monica Studios haven't officially announced a new God of War game, though a sequel is rumored to be in development. Barlog's position hasn't changed since he shut down talk of the 2018 God of War release having microtransactions and the response to his tweet likely to further cement his stance. So, unless Barlog makes a very big and very surprising U-turn between now and then, God of War fans probably don't have to worry that microtransactions will be added.

God of War is out now, exclusively for PS4.
