The streaming service Netflix has made its intentions clear to start adapting some of its original shows and movies into video games. While interactive content, such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Minecraft: Story Mode, and Bear Grylls' You vs. Wild, have started to scratch the surface of Netflix's user-controlled experiences, full-scale games are still a work-in-progress for the company. While it's not entirely its own project, a collaboration between Netflix and developer Epic Games, through Fortnite, could showcase the potential for one of the former's most celebrated shows.

During its panel at E3 this week, Netflix announced a crossover event between Fortnite and Stranger Things will be happening soon. With the show's third season set to release on July 4th, Netflix's Director of Interactive Gaming Chris Lee let it be known that the event will go live around the time the show's third season launches. Season 9 of Fortnite, ironically, already includes a small cameo for the supernatural show in its battle royale game, with the Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Parlor from the Season 3 trailer being added in the Mega Mall portion of the map.

This isn't the first time Fortnite has worked with a major studio outside of gaming to bring them into its popular battle royale game. Both last year and this past April, Marvel and Epic Games teamed up to bring limited-run Infinity Gauntlet and Avengers: Endgame crossover events into Fortnite. It seems Epic Games has a persistence for working with production companies right when they're about to release a major project, and with Netflix and Stranger Things, the formula doesn't seem to have changed.

While Netflix announced it'd be at E3 a while back, there are other avenues in which the company has been working on new gaming projects. While Telltale Games, unfortunately, shut down this past September, the narrative-driven developer had at least done some work on a Stranger Things game before it was cancelled. Another huge milestone was the reveal of Stranger Things 3: The Game for Nintendo Switch this past March. The isometric adventure game launches on July 4th, the same day as the show's third season. The company is also working on a mobile RPG based in the same universe, and it is expected to launch in 2020.

Fortnite is available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
