In what appears to be a premature reveal, Borderlands 2 free DLC Commander Lilith & The Fight For Sanctuary has been unveiled. The leak comes via a Steam profile that features the DLC's title and a promo image with Lilith and her flaming wings. While the profile for Commander Lilith &  The Fight for Sanctuary isn't live just yet, there is one other interesting detail about the Borderlands 2 DLC: it's planned for release on Sunday, June 9. The same day as Xbox's E3 2019 press conference.

The reveal of free DLC for Borderlands 2 isn't a complete surprise, however. An anonymously sourced rumor spread a week ago saying that Gearbox was planning to release free DLC as part of E3, even going so far as confirming the now official name of the DLC. The rumor claimed that Commander Lilith & The Fight For Sanctuary is intended to bridge the story between Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3, but provided no further details.

A round of free DLC prior to the launch of Borderlands 3 on September 13 offers more than just an opportunity to tell more story, however. Offering free DLC is certain to get a large number of gamers back into Borderlands 2 and excited about the possibilities offered by Borderlands 3. More than that, it'll get Borderlands 2 players back into using Gearbox's SHIFT codes, which it'll likely be handing out routinely in the months to come. It's the perfect way to acclimate players to Borderlands 3's SHIFT system (and potential microtransactions).

Altogether, releasing free Borderlands 2 DLC is a particularly clever idea. It'll definitely prove a net boon for Gearbox in many ways, but more importantly, it's free new content for Borderlands 2 players to dive into. Sure, Borderlands 2 is a few years old at this point, but it's still a great game and any new content is likely to be well-received.

While the evidence at hand is rather indisputable, Borderlands fans won't have to wait long to see whether this leak is true or not. According to the leaked Steam profile, Borderlands 2: Commander Lilith & The Fight For Sanctuary will launch on June 9 and will be free. That means that the DLC will either be announced during Microsoft's Xbox E3 2019 press briefing or separate from the event in the days ahead. Given the announcement would likely tie into a Borderlands 3 trailer or announcement pretty well, the Xbox appearance seems most likely. Stay tuned.

Borderlands 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One via the Borderlands: The Handsome Collection bundle. Borderlands 3 releases September 13 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
