Rumors regarding Game of Thrones' author George R. R. Martin working with From Software on a new game have grown remarkably since last night's revelation. Martin himself confirmed that he consulted with a Japanese developer on a new game, reinvigorating a months-old rumor that he'd met with From Software. The rumor has grown substantially in just a matter of hours, confirming the project, naming it Great Rune, and claiming it's bound for E3 2019 to be revealed during the Xbox keynote.

Further, the first Great Rune game details have been shared via these rumors, as well. According to the leaks, Great Rune is an open world From Software game with exploration from horseback. The setting of the game will be Norse in nature and rich in Norse mythology. It's unclear just how realistic, or just how fantastical, the game will be. Given From Software's pedigree, however, it's probably safe to assume a preference for the latter.

The project is said to be helmed by Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice director Hidetaka Miyazaki. He'll be returning to his Dark Souls publisher, Bandai Namco, for Great Rune. That likely means it's safe to assume Great Rune will be multiplatform at launch. The game's rumored to be revealed during Microsoft's Xbox E3 2019 press conference on Jun 9 at 1:00 pm PT. There's no word on whether the reveal will be entirely cinematic or if it'll feature gameplay, let alone whether Great Rune will be shown in a larger capacity during E3 2019.

Finally, and perhaps surprisingly, there have been no details leaked regarding Great Rune's release date. A near release seems unlikely given Miyazaki just wrapped up development of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice earlier this year. That could mean that Great Rune is targeting 2020 or beyond and is built for next-generation consoles. The visuals shown during E3 2019 will provide a good hint regarding what to expect.

Also of note, though perhaps unrelated, is another From Software rumor claiming that the company will announce a game tied to a "100-Year Civil War" at E3. That game is supposed to be directed by Yui Tanimura and co-directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. This project is said to be a dark, medieval ARPG inspired by Dark Souls. It's different enough from the George R. R. Martin project to likely be a second game, rather than the same, but given it's all rumor it's worth pointing out that they could both be a confusing take on the same project. From Software is confirmed to be working on at least two unannounced projects, though.

Given the sheer amount of rumors swirling about this subject, it's best to note that nothing has been substantiated as-of-yet. George R. R. Martin has said that he's consulted with a Japanese studio, but that's all that's official so far. What From Software is working on and when it will be shown is all rumor at this point. That said, with E3 2019 just a matter of weeks away and Microsoft's Xbox keynote being one of the first events of the show, it's just a matter of time before the truth is known. Great Rune or otherwise, it's something to look forward to.
