Overwatch eSports program Overwatch League makes a major mistake during its Mother's Day broadcast. The official stream of the Sunday, May 12 games featured an image of notorious real-life serial killers sent in by a viewer.

As part of the Overwatch Mother's Day celebration, the official Overwatch League stream displayed tweets sent in from users celebrating their mothers. One tweet displayed came from a user with the handle "bcafcjames" who said that their mom "couldn't be with us right now but I know she'd be happy knowing the [San Francisco Overwatch League team] Shock are doing so good!" with the hashtag #OWLMOMS. On its own, it would be a normal tweet but the attached image was of British serial killers Fred and Rose West.

A screenshot of the mistake was posted by Twitter user "TheMasterKrook". The Twitter user also suggested that the Overwatch League should reverse image searches every image sent in to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

It's unclear how many people saw the mistake in the live broadcast. Millions of people watch Overwatch League streams and the San Francisco Shock's playoff win was followed and talked about by many users on social media. The screenshot tweet now has more than 1,500 retweets, more than 5,500 likes and nearly 200 replies from users mocking the Overwatch League or expressing their shock that this happened. However, the official Overwatch League Twitter has not posted about the mistake and it's unclear if anyone at Blizzard or Overwatch League knows about it.

Blizzard and the Overwatch League have enacted a strict social media policy on players, also making sure that they do not post or make discriminatory or offensive comments while streaming. Dallas Fuel player Felix "xQc" Lengyel was dropped from the team after repeated warnings and punishments for discriminatory comments he had made while streaming.

Several other Overwatch League players were also fined or given suspensions for their actions on Twitch and social media. Some fans of the Overwatch League may be wondering why Blizzard takes such a strong stance on its players' actions on social media but doesn't put the same effort into its own. While there is a difference between using hate speech or making a racially disparaging comment and mistakenly broadcasting an image of a serial killer, this does show that Blizzard needs to be more careful.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
